Have a historical and cultural walk through the city towns.
It´s a must to visit the university city of Coimbra when you are here. The university is the third oldest of Europe (1537). The library, the church and the exam room are the highlights of your visit. It´s situated on top of a hill with a large square overlooking the big river Mondego. After your visit you walk down through the little cobbled streets to arrive in the main shopping street. And when in Coimbra get to know the fado of the city in the bar situated in an old monastery next to the church Santa Cruz.
Viseu is a very charming city with a good museum about the painter Grão Vasco. On top you find the beautiful church, the museum and little streets with nice shops. Combine your trip with the big market on Tuesday. It is the place to buy the regional products.
Apart from these 2 big cities you can visit the Thursday market of Arganil where everybody is meeting each other while eating roasted chicken. The same can be done on the Sunday market of Tábua.
Don´t miss the Olive oil Museum where you find everything you want to know about olive trees, olives and olive oil. The little village of Borbadela nearby has beautiful old houses.
